A Toilet Backup That Turned Out to Be a Sewer Problem
The call came in as a simple toilet stoppage at a home in Torrance — water rising in the bowl, slow to drain, and coming back within days of every attempt to plunge it. Our technician cleared the line with a cable machine first so the household had working plumbing again, then followed up with a camera inspection to find out why the blockage kept returning.
The camera told the real story: damaged saddle connections on the lower lateral, down near the city connection, where debris had been catching and building up. Clearing alone was never going to hold. We opened an access point in native dirt, cut out the failed section of the 4-inch main sewer, prepped the pipe and installed a cured-in-place liner out to the curb. With the sewer sound again, both toilets were replaced with comfort-height ADA models on new flanges, wax seals, bolts and supply lines, and a third toilet was pulled and reset on upgraded floor hardware.
How We Got the Job Done
Step 1 — DRAIN CLEARING
Cable the blocked line and restore flow
We accessed the cleanout and ran a cable machine through the affected drain to break up and pull back the obstruction. Flow was restored the same visit, which stopped the backups and gave us a clean pipe to inspect.
Step 2 — CAMERA INSPECTION
Find out why it kept backing up
With the line open, we pushed a sewer camera down the main and recorded the run. The footage showed damaged saddle connections on the lower lateral near the city connection — a catch point that had been collecting debris and choking the line down.
Step 3 — ACCESS
Open a single access point in native dirt
Rather than trenching the whole yard, we hand-dug one access hole up to five feet deep to reach the 4-inch main sewer and removed up to three feet of pipe. That gave us a working entry into the existing system with minimal disturbance to the property.
Step 4 — PIPE PREP
Prep the host pipe for lining
Before any liner goes in, the host pipe has to be clean and structurally ready. We cleaned and prepped the interior, verified the line was in condition to accept a liner, and re-ran the camera to confirm the path from the access point to the curb.
Step 5 — TRENCHLESS LINING
Line the main sewer out to the curb
We pulled a cured-in-place liner through the 4-inch main from our access point out to the city curb, sealing the damaged section and creating a smooth, jointless interior surface for the flow to travel through. Once cured, the liner was camera-checked end to end.
Step 6 — FIXTURES & TESTING
New toilets set and everything flow-tested
Two toilets were replaced with standard elongated comfort-height ADA models, each on a new wax ring with flange, closet bolts and a fresh closet supply line, with the shutoffs checked. A third toilet was pulled, its floor mounting hardware upgraded with a repair flange, and reset leak-free. We finished with repeated flush and flow tests and backfilled the access point.
