Project Overview

A Damaged Sewer Main in the Street — Cut, Repair, Restore

This Carson job involved the public right-of-way — a damaged section of the sewer main sitting 8 feet below the street surface. Accessing it required cutting a 6×4 section of asphalt and excavating through 8 feet of compacted road base before the pipe was even visible.

Once exposed, our crew performed a spot repair — removing only the damaged section of sewer main and replacing it, rather than excavating and replacing the entire line. The trench was backfilled with slurry and the street surface restored with new asphalt, leaving the road in better condition than we found it.

Team Rooter is licensed and equipped for public right-of-way sewer work in Carson and throughout Los Angeles County — including all required permit coordination, traffic control setup, and asphalt restoration.

Step-by-Step Process

How We Got the Job Done

1
Step 1 — Camera Inspection

Locate the damage and confirm scope before cutting the street

Before cutting asphalt, we camera-inspected the sewer main to pinpoint the exact location and extent of the damaged section. This confirmed it was a discrete spot repair — not a condition requiring full line replacement — and told us exactly where to cut.

2
Step 2 — Asphalt Cut

Cut a 6×4 section of street asphalt

Using a concrete saw, we cut a 6×4 section of asphalt directly above the damaged pipe. Clean, precise cuts minimise the footprint and make final asphalt restoration cleaner and more durable.

3
Step 3 — Excavation

Dig 8 feet down through compacted road base

The sewer main sat 8 feet below the surface — requiring shoring, proper staging of excavated material, and traffic management. Our crew excavated through road base and native soil to fully expose the damaged section of pipe.

4
Step 4 — Spot Repair

Remove the damaged section and replace it

The compromised section of sewer main was cut out, the new section was fitted and sealed with approved couplings, and the line was verified for flow and alignment before backfill began. Spot repair preserves all undamaged pipe and is the correct approach when damage is isolated.

5
Step 5 — Backfill & Asphalt Restore

Backfill with slurry, restore the street surface with new asphalt

The trench was backfilled with controlled-density fill slurry to eliminate voids and prevent future settlement, then topped with compacted base and a new asphalt cap. The finished street surface is smooth, flush, and durable.

Why Street Sewer Repairs in Carson Require a Licensed Contractor

Carson is served by a mix of city sewer infrastructure and LA County-maintained lines, and any work that touches the public right-of-way — including the asphalt, curb-to-curb — requires a licensed contractor with the proper bonding, insurance, and permit authorization to work in the street.

Carson's older residential areas have sewer mains that were installed in the 1960s and 1970s. These pipes are approaching or past their 50-to-70-year service life, and point failures like this one — a discrete damaged section rather than systemic collapse — are exactly what spot repair is designed for. Camera inspection confirmed the rest of the main was sound, making replacement unnecessary and spot repair the right call.

  • Licensed for public right-of-way sewer work in Carson and LA County
  • Full permit coordination and city inspector sign-off handled in-house
  • Camera inspection before every recommendation — no guesswork
  • Asphalt restoration to city standards — not a patch job
  • Bonded, insured, workers’ comp on every technician

Team Rooter is an honest company to do business! They take care the job warranty without a question. Three years ago they repaired my sewer line with trenchless sewer pipe replacement. Last weekend the sewer backup to bathroom again. Called their customer service, unfortunately all the serviceman are out at the time, I got a local plumber came right way to clean out the blockage. Next day called Team Rooter reported the problem, a supervisor discuss the situation with me by phone and offered sending a technician to site to investigate. Mr. James Craig came with Cam Video the next day found tree roots break into pipe through a coupler. He immediately authorized a repair job: to break the concrete, dig 3 ft down to reach and replace the broken pipe coupler. Two men crew showed up next day completed the job which could value of thousands dollars but all under warranty. A special thanks to Mr. James Craig, his is knowledgeable and friendly. His kindly smile really comforts my anxiety. I would highly recommend Team Rooter for any plumber problem because rest assure they will come back to fulfill their promise.

Common Questions

Sewer Line Repair in Carson — FAQs

What is a sewer main spot repair and when is it the right choice?

A spot repair removes and replaces only the damaged section of pipe — not the entire line. It is the right choice when a camera inspection confirms the damage is isolated to one area and the surrounding pipe is in acceptable condition. It costs significantly less than full line replacement and produces the same result: a sound, flowing sewer at that section. On this Carson job, the camera confirmed the rest of the main was sound.

Do you need permits to cut and repair a street sewer in Carson?

Yes — any work in the public right-of-way in Carson requires permits from the city and, where applicable, LA County. This includes the asphalt cut, excavation, repair, and asphalt restoration. Team Rooter handles all permitting in-house, including coordination with city inspectors and final sign-off. We are licensed, bonded, and insured for street-level sewer work.

How deep do sewer mains typically run in Carson?

Sewer main depth varies by street and neighborhood. On this job the main sat 8 feet below the surface — typical for older Los Angeles County infrastructure installed in the 1960s and 1970s, where deeper mains allowed for gravity-flow connections from multiple properties. Depth is always confirmed by camera and probing before excavation begins.

What does asphalt restoration involve after a street sewer repair?

After the repair and backfill, we place controlled-density fill slurry in the trench to eliminate voids — this prevents future sinking or cracking at the surface. A compacted aggregate base is added, and the final asphalt cap is applied flush with the surrounding road surface. City-standard restoration — not a temporary cold patch that deteriorates within months.

How do I know if my sewer main needs repair versus just cleaning?

Recurring backups, slow drains throughout the property, sewage odors, or wet patches in the street are all signs worth investigating. A camera inspection of the main line shows the actual condition of the pipe — root intrusion, cracks, offset joints, collapsed sections — and tells you whether the problem is a blockage that can be cleared or a structural defect that needs repair.
