Project Overview

A Root-Blocked, Flat-Running Drain Line Rebuilt the Right Way

The call started the way most drain calls do: fixtures backing up and slow to clear, with no obvious cause above the floor. Camera work and hydro jetting told the real story — fine roots had worked into a joint on the 2-inch ABS drain line at the back of the property, and a length of that same pipe had settled until it ran nearly flat. Water was sitting in the line instead of moving toward the sewer, so debris built up faster than any cabling could keep pace with.

Rather than cable it again and hope, our crew opened a spot repair, followed the ABS out toward the property line and exposed it by hand. The root-damaged section came out and was replaced with new 2-inch ABS joined with shielded couplings. A second stretch was cut out and re-sloped to give the line proper fall, and a cleanout was set for easy future maintenance. The hydro jetter came back through afterward and the whole run was camera-verified clean. Work in this Sylmar neighborhood spanned five days start to finish.

Step-by-Step Process

How We Got the Job Done

1

Step 1 — DIAGNOSIS

Find Out Why the Drain Kept Backing Up

We started at the accessible point on the drain line and worked the blockage to confirm where flow stopped. Camera footage and the behavior of the line pointed to two separate problems in the same 2-inch ABS run: root intrusion and a section carrying no fall.

Two causes, one line — roots at a joint plus a flat-running section holding water.
2

Step 2 — HYDRO JETTING

Clear the Line Under High-Pressure Water

Hydro jetting opened the main and branch line from the easy-access point, scouring the pipe walls instead of just punching a hole through the debris. That restored flow and gave us clean pipe to inspect and measure against.

Jetting washes the pipe wall clean — cabling alone leaves buildup behind.
3

Step 3 — EXCAVATION

Open a Spot Repair and Expose the ABS

Our technician opened a targeted spot repair at the back of the property and hand-dug along the 2-inch ABS toward the property line. Digging by hand around a live drain line keeps the pipe, and everything else buried nearby, intact.

Hand excavation only — no machine near an active drain line.
4

Step 4 — PIPE REPLACEMENT

Cut Out the Root Damage, Install New ABS

With the pipe fully exposed, the root-invaded section was cut out and replaced with new 2-inch ABS, tied in with shielded couplings for a solid, supported joint. Roots follow moisture, so removing the compromised section removes the way back in.

2″ shielded couplings used at both tie-in points.
5

Step 5 — RE-SLOPE & CLEANOUT

Restore Proper Fall and Add Access

An additional 10 to 15 feet of ABS was cut out and reset to proper grade so waste moves instead of pooling. We also installed a cleanout on the repaired run, giving any future maintenance a direct entry point without opening the ground again.

6

Step 6 — VERIFICATION

Re-Jet, Re-Camera, Backfill

The hydro jetter returned to flush the remainder of the drain line, then we ran the camera end to end to confirm clean pipe and continuous fall through the new section. Once footage looked right, the excavation was backfilled and the area cleaned up.

⛏️

Spot Repair Excavation

Targeted hand excavation to expose the 2-inch ABS drain line at the rear of the property without disturbing surrounding ground more than needed.

🔧

ABS Pipe Replacement

Root-damaged 2-inch ABS cut out and replaced with new pipe, joined using shielded couplings for a supported, watertight connection.

📐

Re-Sloping & Cleanout

An additional length of ABS reset to proper grade, plus a new cleanout installed so future service can be done from the surface.

Full Testing & Verification

Team Rooter is an honest company to do business! They take care the job warranty without a question. Three years ago they repaired my sewer line with trenchless sewer pipe replacement. Last weekend the sewer backup to bathroom again. Called their customer service, unfortunately all the serviceman are out at the time, I got a local plumber came right way to clean out the blockage. Next day called Team Rooter reported the problem, a supervisor discuss the situation with me by phone and offered sending a technician to site to investigate. Mr. James Craig came with Cam Video the next day found tree roots break into pipe through a coupler. He immediately authorized a repair job: to break the concrete, dig 3 ft down to reach and replace the broken pipe coupler. Two men crew showed up next day completed the job which could value of thousands dollars but all under warranty. A special thanks to Mr. James Craig, his is knowledgeable and friendly. His kindly smile really comforts my anxiety. I would highly recommend Team Rooter for any plumber problem because rest assure they will come back to fulfill their promise.

Local Expertise

Why Sylmar Drain Lines Fail Where They Do

Sylmar sits at the north end of the San Fernando Valley with mature trees, decades-old homes and plenty of properties where drain lines were extended toward the rear of the lot over the years. Two things follow from that: thirsty root systems that find any joint holding moisture, and long runs of small-diameter pipe that lose their grade as soil settles. Both showed up on this job.

Fix the cause, not just the clog

A drain that clogs every few months is usually telling you something structural. When the camera shows roots at a joint or standing water in a flat section, cabling only buys time. Replacing the damaged pipe, restoring proper fall and adding a cleanout is what actually ends the cycle — and it gives the next technician a way in without digging.

Why does my drain keep clogging after it gets cleared?

Repeat clogs almost always mean there is a physical defect in the line, not just debris. Root intrusion at a joint, a low or flat section holding water, an offset, or heavy scale will all trap material again within weeks or months. A camera inspection is what separates a one-off blockage from a pipe that needs repair.

How do tree roots get into a drain line?

Roots enter through joints and hairline cracks that are already leaking moisture. In older Sylmar yards with mature trees, a joint that seeps even slightly becomes a target, and once fine roots are inside they thicken and catch everything that flows past. Removing the affected pipe section is the durable fix.

What does re-sloping a drain line actually do?

Re-sloping resets the pipe to the grade it needs so waste and water keep moving instead of pooling. Drain lines rely on gravity, and when soil settles under a run the pipe goes flat or dips, so solids drop out of suspension and build up. Cutting the section out and resetting the fall restores normal flow.

Is hydro jetting safe for an older ABS drain line?

Yes, when the line is inspected first and the pressure is matched to the pipe. We camera the line to check its condition before jetting, and jetting has the advantage of cleaning the full pipe wall rather than boring a channel through the blockage. If the camera shows a break or collapse, repair comes before cleaning.

What does a clogged drain repair like this cost in Sylmar?

Cost depends entirely on what the on-site diagnosis finds — whether the line simply needs cleaning or whether pipe has to be exposed, replaced and re-sloped, and how deep and accessible that pipe is. We inspect, explain what the camera shows, and give you a transparent written estimate before any work begins. Call (800) 818-2397 to get scheduled.
