Old Cast Iron Out, One Solid Sewer Line In
Cast iron drain lines were the standard in Los Angeles housing for decades, and they do eventually run out of road. Scale builds on the inside wall, the bottom of the pipe corrodes thin, joints separate, and roots find the openings. That is the stage this system had reached — the main line leaving the foundation and the branch drains under the crawl space were both original material.
Team Rooter replaced the 4-inch main sewer from the point it exits the foundation out toward the property line, installing one continuous piece of pipe with no joints for roots or offsets to exploit. Under the crawl space, the old cast iron and galvanized branch lines serving the kitchen, bathroom sink and bathtub came out and new ABS plastic piping went in, strapped and sloped for proper drainage. All removed metal pipe was hauled away.
How We Got the Job Done
Step 1 — DIAGNOSIS
Camera Inspection and Scope Walk
We ran a camera through the drain system and inspected the crawl space to map exactly what was original cast iron and galvanized pipe and where the failures were. That told us the repair had to cover both the main line out of the foundation and the branch drains overhead of the dirt.
Step 2 — EXCAVATION
Exposing the Damaged Main Line
Our crew hand-dug native soil to expose the damaged section of the original cast iron sewer, starting at the point it exits the foundation and working toward the property line. Keeping the trench tight and controlled limits disturbance to the yard and gives us clean working access to the pipe.
Step 3 — MAIN REPLACEMENT
One Solid 4-Inch Run, No Joints
The failed cast iron came out and a new 4-inch line went in as a single continuous piece of piping. With no joints or couplings along the run, there are no gaps for roots to enter and no shoulders for offsets or debris to catch on — the two things that put most older sewer lines back on a service call.
Step 4 — CRAWL SPACE REPIPE
Kitchen, Bath Sink and Tub Drains
Working under the crawl space, we removed the original cast iron and galvanized branch drains. New 2-inch plastic pipe was run for the kitchen drain — reusing the existing P-trap and sanitary tee through a small opened section of drywall below the kitchen — and new ABS piping replaced the bathroom sink and bathtub drains, all tying into the new 4-inch main.
Step 5 — HAUL-AWAY & BACKFILL
Old Metal Pipe Off the Property
Every length of removed cast iron and galvanized pipe was hauled off site. The trench was backfilled and the native dirt packed down, and the crawl space was cleared of debris so the space is clean for future access.
Step 6 — TESTING
Flow Testing and Final Camera Pass
We ran every fixture on the new system — kitchen, bathroom sink and bathtub — and watched flow through the new main to confirm full drainage with no standing water or slow points. A final camera pass and photo set documented the completed installation.
